Traditional Diagnosis

Diagnosis

Your first consultation will be in the region of two hours. This time is needed in order to assess your general state of health in order to identify the underlying patterns of disharmony and give you the most effective treatment.

I shall be asking you about your current symptoms and what treatment you have received so far, your medical history, whether there are any hereditory diseases in your family, your diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and stresses in your life.

Some of the questions during the diagnosis may appear to be unconnected to the imbalance that you wish to have treated but may be necessary for me to understand why your symptoms have arisen in the first place and how to treat you. Acupuncture is an holistic approach which treats the person as a whole and any information about the individual can be relevant to establishing a complete picture. This information can give insight into the energetic interactions which may be responsible for the symptoms that you suffer from.

Once enough information has been gathered to determine the likely causes and imbalances of your problems, I shall select the most appropriate treatment strategy. This may be treatment with acupuncture needles alone, or include moxa and/or cupping.

Physical Diagnosis:
To discover how the energies are flowing in your body, your pulses will be felt on both wrists, and their quality, rhythm and strength will be noted. The structure, colour and coating of your tongue also give a good guide to your physical health. The aim is to discover which energy channels need adjusting for your specific complaint to improve, and which require treatment to boost your overall energy and vitality.

Depending on your complaint I may need to examine you physically in order to assess the areas of pain or discomfort.

Points of consideration for your appointments:
It is preferable that you wear no make-up or perfume for acupuncture treatments so that all nuances can be observed.
If your appointment is around lunch time or dinner time I would also recommend that you have had something to eat before treatment so that you do not suffer from low blood-sugar.

The traditional diagnosis is usually followed by a treatment.
