YinYang concept in acupuncture

The Concept of Yin and Yang

The concept of Yin and Yang is probably the most important and distinctive theory of TCM. The Chinese concept of Yin-Yang represents opposite but complementary qualities and each thing or phenomenon could be itself and its contrary. Moreover, Yin contains the seed of Yang and vice versa.

Yin and Yang also stand for two stages in the process of change and transformation - just like the day turns to night and back to the day again.

Every physiological process and every symptom or sign can be analysed in the light of Yin-Yang theory.

Its relevance to acupuncture treatment

During the diagnosis many of the questions that I ask are designed to establish the degree of imbalances within Yin and Yang as they relate to your well-being as well as your complaint. For example, you may wish to have treatment for a knee pain which you have had for a number of months or even years. The label 'osteoarthritis of the knee' in itself does not tell me very much though as it is not the osteoarthritis which I am treating. In order for me to find out what kind of an energetic imbalance is causing you this pain in your knee I shall ask a variety of different questions, all of which are designed to elicit which particular treatment strategy is important for you.

From a TCM perspective this pain may be caused by deficiency or excess patterns. The nature of the pain, the location, the time of day and any other information which is unique to your particular pain will be of relevance in establishing which pattern of disharmony may be causing your pain and lead me to formulate my treatment plan.
