During an acupuncture treatment I may use a variety of of equipment such as needles, moxa, or cups. In most cases just needles are used, but when a 'cold condition' has been diagnosed moxa may be used. Each procedure will be explained to you before use so that you feel comfortable during treatment.

Acupuncture needles:

Acupuncture needles come in various sizes which range from 0.5 inches to 1.5 inches in length and are of a very, very fine diameter. All needles are pre-sterilized and disposed of immediately after treatment.

Moxa:

Moxa is a smouldering herb which is used to warm acupuncture points and encourage the body's energy to flow smoothly. Moxa can either be applied directly to the skin, placed on a needle or be used indirectly by passing a long roll of burning moxa over larger areas. Some people feel the cold very easily and even say 'I can feel it in my bones' - from an acupuncture perspective these conditions often benefit from the warming benefits of moxa.

Cups:

Cupping therapy is suitable for promoting the flow of energy. A vacuum is created inside the cups with the help of a piece of burning cotton wool. The cup is then quickly applied to the affected area and left in place either for a very short time or for 5-10 minutes. As the blood is drawn to the surface red marks may remain for a day or two after treatment but they will fade and no marks will be left.
